QUICK FIRE 10 with Liam O'Mahoney

“Work hard, play hard"

I had a few questions to ask Liam O'Mahoney, partner & associate director, and he shared his challenges and impressive accomplishments throughout his career at Eames.

1. How did you get into recruitment?

It was an industry I had friends working in but they were focused on different markets i.e. Oil & Gas.  It wasn’t my first choice career as I was playing professional basketball but once I stumbled into it I haven’t looked back.

2. What is your advice for someone just getting into recruitment?

Be ready to work your socks off! Work hard, play hard.

3. What is it about recruitment that has kept you in the industry?

The challenge of taking ownership in building a desk and reputation in a highly competitive market and the financial rewards that are available when you put in the time and effort.

4. What is your proudest moment in your career to date?

In 2018 I was Eames' global top biller by smashing the desk budget with 1.2 million desk revenue for 2018 whilst building a Financial Crime Hub from scratch for a well-known Investment Bank. The division was also the top supplier for Compliance on numerous accounts.

5. What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your career so far and how have you overcome that?

Extremely tough markets in 2012, 2013 and 2019 have proved challenging but prioritising and maintaining strong relationships with your network even through quiet periods will pull you through. There is always light at the end of the tunnel.

6. What is your number 1 secret to success?

Be the hardest worker in the room.

7. What’s the best career advice you’ve ever been given?

'Clients are just human’

8. What are you driven by and how do you stay motivated?

Consistently challenge myself and the team to be the best in the market for my sector coverage.

On a personal level this allows me to set daily and half year objectives that align with my financial goals.

From a team perspective, to ensure we all have a common goal and therefore driven and hungry to stay competitive despite market challenges.

9. What do you think you would have been had you not gone into recruitment?

Not sure if it was feasible and it was certainly not a sensible move but following a failed basketball career I wanted to be a broker.

10. How do you keep a work/life balance?

I always ensure that I maintain personal life goals or trips away in the diary that have nothing to do with work. It’s a chance to switch off. I also regularly go to the gym after a long or stressful day which always allows me to have some down time.
