An evening of reserving talk and networking with LMSG

by Hannah Turner

Our actuarial team was very proud to sponsor the latest London Market Students’ Group (LMSG) networking event on Tuesday 23rd September at the Chamberlain Hotel in London. We were joined by 60 student and newly qualified actuaries for an evening of reserving talk and networking, hosted by Muhammad Ali of Hymans Robertson, the independent insurance, pensions and investments consultancy.

Ali kicked off the evening with a talk on his new reserving method, ‘Additive Chain Ladder,’ which he’ll be discussing at the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) GIRO Conference in November. The talk gave attendees a chance to see an alternative perspective on reserving, complementing and building on the standard methods they use early in their careers. “I found this talk highly valuable as I am looking to get a reserving rotation next in my graduate programme,” commented one of the student actuaries present.

Our team then took the opportunity to catch up with our guests on all things reserving and general insurance. The evening included a raffle, which saw two of our lucky attendees win a voucher for five coffees at Rosslyn Coffee and a £100 Dishoom voucher.

The LMSG organises networking events for student and newly qualified actuaries working in general insurance. These events often see senior figures in the general insurance industry deliver presentations to the next generation of actuaries, sharing wisdom, advice and expertise. Focusing on everything from Lloyd’s syndicates and London Market companies to insurance companies, consultancies and regulators, these events give junior actuaries the opportunity to get to know their industry peers and discuss their career journeys, as another of our guests remarked: “It's great to meet other students in the market at these events, and the talks are always interesting.”

As the sponsor of Tuesday’s discussion, these events are so important in engaging our network of actuaries, sharing market knowledge and helping to cultivate the next generation of actuarial talent. Hannah Turner, Partner and Director for specialist disciplines, said: “This is the second year we have sponsored one of the LMSG talks and we always see such a great turnout at these events. Looking forward to further partnerships with the LMSG.”

Ali added: “I’ve previously shared the method with senior actuaries and will be doing so again at GIRO, but presenting it to students was refreshing – the questions were different and brought a new perspective. It was also fantastic to see how bright the future of the actuarial profession looks, with strong talent coming through.”

Many thanks to everyone who attended and to Ali for sharing his insights. We look forward to seeing him again at the GIRO Conference!
