UK Pensions Market Update and Workplace Attitudes Survey Insight 2025
Looking at the last year in the UK pensions actuarial industry
What are current attitudes amongst professionals working in the UK pensions actuarial industry? How do they view the longevity of their careers? What challenges do they face? Our life and pensions team recently conducted a survey of over 100 actuarial professionals of all levels, working within the UK pensions space, to get an insight into the evolving pensions landscape and how both individuals and employers might adapt.
Looking for longevity
27% of actuarial professionals in pensions rank limited career progression opportunities as their biggest challenge. Many actuaries, particularly at the part and newly qualified level, are feeling stuck in rigid structures with limited routes to broaden their experience. Could this frustration lead them to pursue roles outside pensions – and how are employers reacting?
Reasons for moving
Actuarial professionals are generally happy in their role, enjoying a strong sense of purpose and the opportunity to have a direct impact on the financial security of pension scheme members. So why would they ever leave? Salary is the dominant driver of career moves, selected as the number one motivator for 58% of respondents. What else is important to them, and are employers doing enough to attract and retain actuarial talent?
