Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to join our team as the Chief Underwriting Officer (CUO) for our Managing General Agency (MGA) in the insurance industry. As the CUO, you will play a critical role in shaping and executing the underwriting strategy, ensuring profitable growth, and maintaining the overall underwriting integrity of our product portfolio.

Responsibilities:

  1. Strategic Underwriting Leadership:

    • Develop and implement underwriting strategies aligned with the company's goals and market dynamics.
    • Provide strategic direction for product development, risk appetite, and underwriting guidelines.
  2. Portfolio Management:

    • Oversee the underwriting process to ensure the profitability and sustainability of the portfolio.
    • Analyze and monitor key performance indicators to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
  3. Risk Assessment:

    • Evaluate and assess risks associated with new and existing products, making data-driven decisions to optimize risk-reward ratios.
    • Work closely with actuarial and analytics teams to enhance risk modeling and pricing methodologies.
  4. Collaboration:

    • Foster strong relationships with internal stakeholders, including marketing, claims, and finance, to ensure cross-functional collaboration and a unified approach to underwriting.
  5. Compliance and Regulatory Oversight:

    • Ensure that all underwriting activities comply with industry regulations and internal policies.
    • Stay updated on changes in regulatory requirements and implement necessary adjustments to underwriting processes.
  6. Talent Development:

    • Build and lead a high-performing underwriting team, providing mentorship, training, and professional development opportunities.
    • Foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement within the underwriting department.
  7. Market Analysis:

    • Stay informed about industry trends, market conditions, and competitive landscapes to identify opportunities for product enhancement and differentiation.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Insurance, or a related field. Advanced degrees or professional certifications (e.g., CPCU, ARM) are a plus.
  • Proven experience in underwriting leadership roles within the insurance industry, with a focus on specialty or niche markets.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and make informed decisions.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Thorough understanding of insurance regulations and compliance requirements.
